Welcome to the U.S. 24 – Fort to Port Project Website

image - new As construction of the new US 24 ‘Fort to Port’ continues near the Ohio state line, the next phase of Fort to Port (Phase 4A) is to be let for bids on October 1, 2008!

Phase 4A will involve construction of the Interchange of new US 24 with State Road 101 and improvement of SR 101 from the interchange north to current US 24.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plans to begin construction in 2008 on the first of five phases that make up the 11-mile Indiana portion of new US 24 from Fort Wayne to the Port of Toledo, Ohio on Lake Erie. The Fort to Port project, part of Governor Daniels’ Major Moves program, is located in Allen County, Indiana.

The purpose of this site is to provide information to interested individuals. Please feel free to explore the site to become more familiar with the project.

The Indiana portion of new route US 24 Fort to Port extends from approximately one half mile east of Interstate 469 at New Haven to the Ohio state line. The first segment to be constructed will be Phase 4 (see map below) from just east of State Road 101 (SR 101) to the Ohio state line. It is scheduled to begin construction in April, 2008.

In Phase 4A, currently slated to begin in December, 2008, a diamond interchange will be constructed at the junction of new US 24 and SR 101. During Phase 4A, SR 101 will also be improved from its intersection with current US 24 to the new interchange at new US 24, a distance of six tenths (0.6) of a mile.

The next segment, Phase 3, is expected to begin construction in 2009. Construction of Phase 2 is currently scheduled to begin in 2010 and the final segment (Phase 1) should start construction in 2011. Two construction seasons are projected for each numbered phase, so the entire Indiana portion of Fort to Port will be opened by late 2012 or early 2013. The construction of Fort to Port is a fully funded Major Moves project not subject to budgetary uncertainties.

INDOT plans to meet the Ohio Department of Transportation’s construction at the state line by late 2009. At that time, the new route US 24 will be opened to two-way traffic from existing US 24, south down the improved SR 101 to the new interchange at new US 24, then east through Ohio and beyond to the Port of Toledo on Lake Erie. This will be the routing of traffic until all remaining phases between SR 101 and I-469 are constructed and ready for traffic. At that time, the entirely new US 24 will be “open for business” from Fort to Port.

When completed, US 24 Fort to Port will feature:

  • Two eastbound travel lanes and two westbound travel lanes separated by a 60-foot wide median.

  • 12-foot wide paved shoulders right of the travel lanes.

  • Diamond interchanges at SR 101 and at Webster Road.
(see link below for Governor Daniel's announcement on Fort to Port Interchanges)

  • Doyle Road, Bull Rapids Road, and State Line Road will overpass new 24.

  • Gustin Road will end on both sides of new 24. Berthaud Road will also end at new 24, but its intersection with Slusher Road will remain.

  • Bremer Road will be terminated 1,000 feet west of Ryan Road.

  • Sampson Road and Woodburn Road will underpass new 24.

  • Access on and off the new US 24 Fort to Port limited access highway in Allen County will be at I-465, Ryan/Bruick Roads, Webster Road and SR 101.

  • A non-vehicular bridge on Ryan/Bruick Road for pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles will overpass new US 24 (see link below for Governor Daniel's announcement on Fort to Port Interchanges).

  • There will be no at-grade intersection with any railroad.
